Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.
On May 25, 2009, our very own Ministry to Men’s group, CHAMPS, held what it hopes will not be its only Memorial Day celebration. Thanks to Paul and Earlene Hathaway who graciously opened the doors to their beautiful ranch, over 120 people, adults and children, observed this day in a very special way. Everyone from our church and those outside the church were invited to come and enjoy some great food, lots of fun activities and, more importantly, fellowship.
The little ones enjoyed water balloons and an assortment of water guns to get soaked. The water activities were not restricted to just the youngsters as some of the adults got involved as well (some unwilling or by surprise) but all had a great time. Volley Ball was popular and played throughout the day as teams rotated with the winners playing hard to stay on the grass.
Our beloved Associate Pastor Gene Wiley gave a brief word of thanks for the food and the feast was on. Here is where many adults really showed their speed and agility. Hamburgers and hot dogs provided by the church were served and a table fit for a king was lined with a delightful assortment of salads and more.

After much eating, fun and games, and more eating, the day finally came to end. With the help of many, the battle field was cleaned, and everyone rode off into the beautiful sun set. The CHAMPS Ministry to Men wants to extend our sincerest thanks for everyone who came out to join us and hope that everyone had a great time. We also want to thank all the service men and women who have committed and given their lives for this great country and the freedom that we enjoy today. God bless you and yours.
